Tour overview

This journey takes you into Khan Khentii, one of Mongolia’s most storied landscapes — a region of forested mountains, sacred lakes, and powerful historical sites tied to the early life of Temüjin (Genghis Khan). Over six days you’ll combine scenic drives with active days of trekking and optional horseback riding, exploring remote monastery ruins, rocky wilderness viewpoints, and places that feel deeply connected to Mongolia’s identity.

The route also includes some of the country’s most iconic highlights near Ulaanbaatar — Terelj National Park, the Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex, and a beautiful final day with horse trekking to Manzushir Monastery in the Bogd Khan Mountain area.

Day-by-day program

Day 1 — Khangal Lake: deep into the Khentii landscapes

Today is a full-day drive into the Khan Khentii region, heading toward Khangal Lake. As you leave the city behind, the scenery begins to change — open land gradually giving way to a more rugged, forested atmosphere. Arrive in time to settle into camp and enjoy your first evening in the quiet of eastern Mongolia.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Tented camping

Day 2 — Baldan Bereeven: trekking to a granite monastery ruin

A full day devoted to trekking to the atmospheric ruins of Baldan Bereeven Monastery, established in the 17th century by order of Zanabazar and built from granite stone. The approach on foot makes the setting even more dramatic, with wild nature slowly revealing traces of Mongolia’s spiritual past. Optional horseback riding can be arranged for those who’d like to experience the terrain in a more traditional way.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Nomadic family ger stay (Buryat)

Day 3 — Khokh Lake & the birthplace story of Chinggis Khaan

Enjoy the region’s rocky scenery and wide views before driving (after lunch) to Khokh Lake and Ereg Buureg — connected to the story of Temüjin’s rise, and the place where he was nominated as Chinggis Khaan, as well as his birthplace area. The landscapes here feel cinematic: open, powerful, and filled with a sense of Mongolia’s origins.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Tented camping

Day 4 — Terelj National Park: granite formations and alpine valleys

Drive to Gorkhi–Terelj National Park, part of the greater Khan Khentii protected area. Terelj is known for its huge granite blocks and cliffs, wildflower meadows, pine-covered mountains, and a small meditation temple with beautiful views. It’s an ideal place for hiking, gentle climbing, and enjoying fresh air close to the capital — without losing the feeling of being in nature.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Nomadic family ger stay

Day 5 — Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex, then countryside evening

Visit the iconic Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex — a towering stainless-steel monument on horseback, with panoramic steppe views from the viewing platform. Afterwards, continue your drive to a nomadic family for a relaxed evening outside the city, a perfect contrast to the monument’s scale and drama.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Nomadic family ger stay

Day 6 — Horse trekking to Manzushir Monastery, then back to Ulaanbaatar

Drive to Zuun-Mod and begin a horse trek to Manzushir Monastery, set in a lush valley of Bogd Khan Mountain. Established in 1733 (once with 20 temples and 300 monks), it was destroyed in 1932 — and today the restored remaining temple and on-site museum tell its story. After the visit, return to Ulaanbaatar.
