Tour overview

Central Mongolia is where the country’s story feels closest to the surface — a landscape of wide steppe horizons, sacred mountains, and the legacy of the Great Mongol Empire. Over eight days you’ll slow down into nomadic life, cross semi-desert scenery and granite ranges, and explore Mongolia’s most important cultural sites, including Karakorum and Erdene Zuu Monastery. Along the way there’s time for the experiences that make Mongolia feel real: camel and horse riding, hiking in big open spaces, and quiet nights under star-filled skies.

Day-by-day program

Day 1 — Into the steppe: Batkhaan Mountain & the Mongol Els dunes

Your journey begins with a drive out of Ulaanbaatar into the wide openness of Central Mongolia. As the city fades, the land expands — big skies, soft rolling steppe, and that unmistakable sense of space that makes Mongolia feel instantly different. You travel toward Batkhaan Mountain and the Mongol Els area, where sand dunes ripple across the steppe like a small desert mirage. Arrive and settle into your first evening with nomadic hosts — warm hospitality, simple comforts, and a beautiful introduction to life beyond the paved road.

Meals included: Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Nomadic family stay

Day 2 — Cultural immersion: a full day with your nomadic hosts

Today is intentionally slow. Wake to the rhythms of the countryside and spend a full day experiencing nomadic life — the routines, the landscape, and the quiet moments that make Mongolia so grounding. Depending on the season and your hosts, you may have the chance to learn about daily chores, local traditions, and the deep connection between people, animals, and land.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Nomadic family stay

Day 3 — Khogno Khan: mountains, forest and semi-desert in one view

Drive to Khogno Khan Natural Reserve, a spectacular “all-in-one” landscape where granite mountains, pockets of forest, and Gobi-like terrain meet. On the way, you’ll stop at scenic points including rock paintings and dunes — small details that make the drive feel like part of the experience rather than a transfer. Arriving in Khogno Khan, enjoy time for camel and horse riding, with wide-open views in every direction.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Tented camping

Day 4 — A day to explore: hiking, camel and horse riding

An “off-driving” day to fully enjoy the Khogno Khan region. Spend time hiking through the scenery and return to the animals — camel and horse riding — experiencing Mongolia the way it’s always been experienced: at a slower pace, with the wind and light as your constant companions.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Tourist camp

Day 5 — Karakorum & Erdene Zuu: Mongolia’s imperial heart

Drive to Karakorum, once the 13th-century capital of the Great Mongol Empire. Here, history is woven into the landscape. Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery Museum, Mongolia’s first major Buddhist centre, and learn about its fate during the 1930s when it was closed and badly damaged. You’ll also see notable local landmarks such as the historic turtle rock before settling in for the night.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Ger guesthouse

Day 6 — Tuvkhun Monastery: forested heights and panoramic views

Today you travel to Tuvkhun Monastery, set high on Undur Shireet Mountain in Uvurkhangai — a beautiful, peaceful place surrounded by forested ranges. Founded in 1651 and associated with Zanabazar’s meditation and religious art, it carries a special stillness. The hike up is part of the magic, rewarded with fresh air and sweeping views across the mountains.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Tented camping

Day 7 — Ugii Lake: birdlife and open-water calm

Drive to Ugii Lake, famous for birdlife and peaceful lakeside scenery at around 1,387 metres above sea level. This is a softer day — time to slow down again, enjoy the water and the skies, and feel the calm that comes so naturally in Mongolia’s open landscapes.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Tourist camp

Day 8 — Return to Ulaanbaatar

Return to Ulaanbaatar, bringing the quiet of the steppe and the memory of Mongolia’s central heartland with you — dunes, monasteries, nomadic hospitality, and a sky that always felt bigger than expected.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
