A season-by-season guide from The Golden Gobi Tours
If you're planning a trip to Mongolia, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is: When is the best time to visit?
The answer depends on what you want to experience. Mongolia is a country of dramatic seasonal contrasts, where each time of year offers something unique—from lush green steppes and vibrant festivals to golden autumn landscapes and snow-covered wilderness.
At The Golden Gobi Tours, we operate our tours during the months when Mongolia is at its very best. Here's what you can expect throughout the travel season.
May – Spring arrives on the steppe
May marks the beginning of the travel season. After the long winter, Mongolia begins to come alive as the grass turns green, rivers flow freely, and newborn livestock fill the countryside.
Temperatures are generally pleasant during the day, although mornings and evenings can still be cool.
Spring is an excellent time for travellers who enjoy peaceful landscapes and fewer visitors. Wildlife is particularly active, making this one of the best months for nature lovers and photographers.
Why travel in May?
Fresh green landscapes
Baby yaks, goats, sheep, and horses everywhere
Excellent wildlife viewing
Quiet tourist sites
Comfortable hiking temperatures
June – One of Mongolia's most beautiful months
June is often considered one of the finest months to visit Mongolia.
The countryside is lush and colourful, wildflowers bloom across the steppe, and the weather is generally warm without becoming too hot. Rivers and lakes are full after the spring melt, creating spectacular scenery throughout Central Mongolia.
Long daylight hours also mean more time to explore each destination.
June is ideal for:
Hiking
Horse riding
Visiting White Lake
Exploring Terelj National Park
Cultural experiences with nomadic families
July – Festival season
July is Mongolia's most famous travel month, thanks to the country's biggest celebration: Naadam Festival.
Held every year from 11–13 July, Naadam celebrates Mongolia's "Three Manly Games":
Horse racing
Wrestling
Archery
For many visitors, witnessing Naadam is a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience. Cities and villages across the country celebrate with colourful ceremonies, music, traditional clothing, and sporting competitions.
July is also one of the warmest months, making it perfect for longer overland journeys.
Because it is peak season, accommodation should be booked well in advance.
Why visit in July?
Experience the famous Naadam Festival
Warm, sunny weather
Vibrant cultural atmosphere
Long daylight hours
Excellent road conditions
August – The perfect balance
If we had to recommend just one month for most travellers, August would be a strong contender.
The weather remains warm, but the busiest festival crowds have disappeared. The grasslands are still beautifully green, rivers remain full, and temperatures are comfortable for both sightseeing and outdoor activities.
It is also an excellent time to visit the Gobi Desert, where daytime temperatures become more pleasant than during the height of summer.
August offers the perfect combination of great weather, stunning landscapes, and a more relaxed pace.
September – Mongolia dressed in gold
As autumn arrives, Mongolia transforms once again.
The forests of northern and central Mongolia turn brilliant shades of yellow and gold, while the crisp air makes hiking especially enjoyable. The summer crowds begin to fade, creating an even greater sense of solitude.
September is particularly popular with photographers thanks to the warm autumn colours and clear blue skies.
Highlights of September include:
Beautiful autumn colours
Cool, comfortable temperatures
Crystal-clear skies
Excellent photography conditions
Peaceful landscapes
What about winter?
Although Mongolia's winters are spectacularly beautiful, they are also among the coldest on Earth, with temperatures regularly dropping below –30°C (-22°F) and sometimes much lower.
Winter travel is certainly possible and offers unique experiences such as the Golden Eagle Festival, frozen Lake Khövsgöl, and traditional winter nomadic life. However, it requires specialised equipment and is best suited to experienced travellers seeking a true Arctic-style adventure.
For most first-time visitors, we recommend travelling between May and September, when road conditions, weather, and sightseeing opportunities are at their best.
Which season is best for your adventure?
Month | Best for |
May | Wildlife, spring landscapes, fewer tourists |
June | Green scenery, hiking, horse riding |
July | Naadam Festival, culture, warm weather |
August | The best all-round travel conditions |
September | Autumn colours, photography, peaceful travel |
